From 2008-2012, I served as a math teacher in PA. Our department head would laminate his scope and sequence, his curricular timeline, before the school year started. Every year he would make a joke of this, but there was nothing funny about it. By laminating it, that meant that his timeline for student learning was fixed and would not change at all!
Fast forward to 2019 when I transitioned into educational leadership roles, and I learned about the 3-5 Year Plan. I think I'm more of a 3-5 Week guy 😃 .
Now, I'm all for setting goals and being organized. However, I also experienced several times when initiatives which very well could have been implemented immediately, were pushed back to wherever they fit into the 3-5 Year Plan. Struggling learners (staff or students) don't have 3-5 years to wait!
I just don't see how this is good for staff, students, parents, or the community.
