Over 20 years of teaching/learning in various school environments, I have come up with a step-by-step plan to turnaround a challenging class. It works! Here goes:
Intentionally assigned seating, preferably in groups of 3/4
Essentially, you are trying to split up all of the students making poor choices
PBIS launch: both individual and class
I prefer classroom "money" for individual student incentives
I prefer class points for whole class incentives. The way I use this is for when the entire class is on-task.
Parent phone calls immediately. It's crucial to gain support from parents ASAP.
I've found that, on average, this takes care of 50-75% of student issues.
Create a weekly behavior points tracker to be emailed or texted home on Fridays.
Notebook checks every Friday.
Kids need to be taking notes and showing their work every class, every day!
Display progress monitoring of all student assignments weekly and on Mondays.
It's beneficial to allow students to complete late classwork for full credit.
It's also beneficial to allow students to retake certain summative assessments.
Ensure you are instructionally planning for bell-to-bell instruction every, single day.
Many of our most challenging students need consistent structure.
Start with a Warm-Up/Do Now
End with an Exit Ticket
And there you have it! I even guarantee if you follow these steps that the classroom will completely transform within 1 week!
