Creating and maintaining a standards-based learning environment is crucial to closing achievement gaps. In fact, standards-based learning is crucial to any learning because without it, we never know what students truly learn.
For example when grading a traditional unit assessment, we might discover that the student earned an 80%, but what does that actually mean? With standardized learning, we would find out, for example, that the student mastered 60% of Standard #1, 90% of Standard #2, and 75% of Standard #3. Now, we can create intentional and accurate remediation options for the student.
Whether we like it or not, kids are currently being assessed according to common standards, such as the B.E.S.T. Standards here in Florida. Because of this, we have to do the following:
Become familiar with the standards for the content we teach
Organize ALL of our instructional resources according to standards. This means EVERY question!
Communicate with students the standard for EVERY question.
Assess students according to the standard for EVERY question.
Have students self-monitor their progress for all questions.
Provide regular remediation opportunities for students, and with a truly standards-based classroom environment as described, providing remediation becomes easy.
