Over the past 20 years, I have come up with a 3-step (+ bonus) approach to technology integration in the classroom, any classroom!
Phase 1: The Basics
In Phase 1, teachers are making use of school-based platforms such as the following:
Google: Classroom, Forms, Slides, Sheets, Docs, Drive, Sites
Apple: Keynote, Pages, Numbers, AirPlay
Microsoft: PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, 365
Device Management: Securly, Apple Classroom, Go Guardian
Phase 2: Instructional Integration
In Phase 2, teachers are making use of content-specific platforms such as the following:
Nearpod, IXL, Adobe, Kami, Kahoot, Quizzes, Quizlet, Pear Deck, Seesaw, Edpuzzle, Blooket, Gimkit, Geogebra, Khan Academy, Prodigy, Class Dojo, Canva, Clever, CK-12
Phase 3: Blended Learning
In Phase 3, teachers are making use of teacher-created blended learning websites in order to transform the student earning experience using the following:
Google Sites, Google Drive, Apple Pages, Screencastify
The process for creating a blended learning classroom is the following:
Choose a class website platform. I strongly recommend Google Sites, which are free, easy to learn, integrate with files in Google Drive, and sync with many other apps.
Create and upload video tutorials for all new student learning. I like using Screencastify, which syncs with Google Drive and Sites, along with Apple Pages to make video content. At the core of the blended learning site is the ability for students to asynchronously access learning in a self-paced manner.
Organize content by skill or standard. I suggest standard.
Provide links for every skill/standard to practice content. It's important to ensure the practice sites you choose provide students with both support and immediate feedback.
Provide additional resources (links/apps) organized by skill/standard to assist in the student learning process. Essentially, you are building the capacity for students to work independently of you! (Although the videos will be of you teaching the lessons).
Phase 4: Rockstar!
In Phase 4, teachers are making use of emerging technologies such as AI. Here are some popular AI sites for use in the classroom:
Flint, School, MagicSchool, Brisk, ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini
