The formative assessment is arguably the most important part of the lesson. The reason is because formative assessments drive teacher direction. This means that effective teachers monitor and adjust their learning trajectory based on the feedback they receive from formative assessments during instruction. And, it goes without saying in 2025 that teaching is fluid, depending on the progress of each, individual student in each, individual class.
Examples of formal/informal formative assessments are the following:
Warm-Ups/Do Nows (Formal)
White Board Observations (Informal)
Skill Mastery Checks (Formal)
Digital Responses (Formal)
Student Progress Observations (Informal)
Exit Tickets (Formal)
Weekly Quizzes (Formal Formative/Summative)
Probably the easiest, most affordable, and most effective means of formative assessing. Individual student whiteboards can be easily created at a home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot. They come in large sheets. Figure out how large you'd like each student board to be, do some math, and you'll walk out with a class set of student whiteboards!
Be creative in your use! You can have two students share one whiteboard. You could have a table group share a whiteboard. You could have students checking each others' whiteboards. Have fun with them while you are also taking note of who needs assistance!
